Former India cricketer Sairaj Bahutule could soon take up a key role in the Indian team’s support staff as discussions continue over appointing a dedicated spin bowling coach. According to reports, head coach Gautam Gambhir has recommended Bahutule’s name to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the team looks to strengthen its coaching structure ahead of upcoming international assignments.
The Indian coaching group currently includes batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. However, the team does not yet have a permanent specialist spin bowling coach, a gap that the management reportedly wants to address.
Sairaj Bahutule Emerges as Strong Candidate
Sairaj Bahutule, a respected figure in Indian domestic cricket, is currently associated with the Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. Reports suggest he is expected to part ways with the franchise after the season, potentially clearing the path for a role with the national team.
The 53-year-old former leg-spinner represented India in two Test matches and eight One Day Internationals between 2001 and 2003. While his international career was brief, Bahutule built an outstanding reputation in domestic cricket, finishing with more than 630 wickets in First-Class cricket. His deep understanding of spin bowling and years of coaching experience have made him a respected mentor within Indian cricket circles.
According to reports, Bahutule has already held discussions with BCCI officials and members of the Indian team management regarding the possible role. Sources close to the development indicate that Gambhir is particularly impressed with Bahutule’s technical knowledge and ability to work closely with young spinners.

Previous Experience With Team India
This would not be Bahutule’s first involvement with the Indian team setup. Over the years, he has frequently worked with players at the National Cricket Academy, now known as the Centre of Excellence. His experience in player development and spin coaching has earned praise from several senior figures in Indian cricket.
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid had also relied on Bahutule’s expertise during the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Dravid reportedly requested him to assist the Indian squad during the high-profile Test series, especially to help the team’s spin bowlers prepare for challenging conditions.
Bahutule was also part of the support staff during India’s tour of Sri Lanka and previously worked alongside Dravid in the coaching setup of the Rajasthan Royals.
Why India Wants a Specialist Spin Coach
Spin bowling has long been one of India’s biggest strengths across formats, particularly in home conditions. With several young spinners emerging in domestic cricket and the IPL, the team management appears focused on building a more specialized coaching structure.
Adding a dedicated expert like Sairaj Bahutule could help India improve workload management for spin bowlers, refine tactical planning, and support the next generation of talent preparing for international cricket.
While the BCCI has not made an official announcement yet, Bahutule’s growing involvement with the national setup suggests that a formal appointment could be considered in the near future.
