Women’s T20WC Warm-Up Match: Strong Performances Signal Early Intent Ahead of Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
India and Australia made positive starts to their preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, securing convincing wins in their opening warm-up fixtures. While India defeated West Indies by 26 runs in Cardiff, Australia overcame England by five wickets in another encouraging display ahead of the global tournament.
Both teams showcased balance with bat and ball, offering a glimpse of the form that has made them among the favorites for the upcoming competition.
India Produce Complete Team Effort Against West Indies
India entered the Women’s T20WC warm up match with confidence following their successful campaign at the Women’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year. The team carried that momentum into Cardiff, producing an all-round performance that proved too strong for West Indies.
Batting first after being asked to take guard, India posted a competitive total of 179 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was built on aggressive starts at the top and a composed finish in the middle order.
Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma laid a solid foundation by attacking the West Indies bowling from the outset. Mandhana, leading the side in the warm-up fixture, looked in excellent touch as she struck boundaries regularly during her brisk 39-run knock from only 23 deliveries. Shafali complemented her captain well, adding 29 runs as the pair shared a valuable opening partnership.
West Indies struggled to maintain consistency with the new ball, allowing India to race through the powerplay. Although the Caribbean side eventually broke the opening stand, India maintained their scoring rate despite losing a few wickets in quick succession.
Bharti Fulmalli Anchors the Innings
After a brief middle-order wobble, Yastika Bhatia and Bharti Fulmalli steadied the innings with an important partnership. Bhatia played confidently for her 36 runs before retiring out, a strategic move designed to provide additional batting opportunities to other squad members during the practice game.
The decision briefly disrupted India’s momentum as wickets fell in successive overs. However, Fulmalli remained calm under pressure and ensured the innings stayed on track.
Her unbeaten 56 from 40 balls proved to be the defining contribution of the innings. Mixing sensible shot selection with timely aggression, she struck six boundaries and the only six of India’s innings. Her knock helped India finish strongly and set West Indies a challenging target of 180.
For the Caribbean side, leg-spinner Afy Fletcher emerged as the standout bowler. Her figures of four wickets for 23 runs highlighted her ability to trouble the Indian batsmen even as runs flowed from the other end.
Indian Spinners Seal Comfortable Victory
West Indies began their chase with positive intent. Experienced all-rounders Deandra Dottin and Shemaine Campbelle helped the team establish a platform, sharing a partnership that kept hopes alive during the early stages of the innings.
However, despite building a decent foundation, West Indies struggled to accelerate at the required rate. The pressure increased as India introduced their spin attack, which quickly changed the complexion of the match.
Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav proved difficult to score against and consistently forced mistakes from the batters. Patil claimed four wickets while Yadav picked up three, accounting for every dismissal in the innings.
Campbelle’s retirement from the middle appeared to halt West Indies’ progress, and a collapse followed soon after. The side lost wickets at regular intervals and found it difficult to rebuild.
Dottin battled hard and finished with 49 runs, narrowly missing a half-century. Late hitting from Aaliyah Alleyne and Shawnisha Hector added some entertainment, but the target remained out of reach as West Indies closed on 153 for 8, leaving India with a deserved 26-run victory.
Australia Outclass England in Cardiff
In the day’s other Women’s T20WC warm up match, Australia underlined why they remain one of the strongest teams in world cricket with a professional five-wicket win over England.
After choosing to bowl first, the six-time champions made an immediate impact. Their disciplined bowling attack dismantled England’s top order, reducing the hosts to 19 for 3 inside the opening five overs.
Faced with early trouble, Alice Capsey and Heather Knight responded impressively. The pair rebuilt the innings through an important partnership that stabilized England’s position and restored some momentum.
Capsey played fluently throughout her innings, while Knight contributed valuable runs before Australia’s bowlers struck back. Leg-spinner Alana King provided the breakthrough by dismissing Knight, and Megan Schutt soon removed Capsey to regain control of the contest.
England Recover but Australia Stay in Control
Despite the setbacks, England found fresh energy through Freya Kemp, who played one of the most aggressive innings of the match. Her quickfire 41 from 27 balls injected momentum into the innings during the closing overs.
Danielle Gibson also contributed valuable runs, helping England recover from their difficult start and reach 157 for 6 from their 20 overs.
The total offered England something to defend, but Australia’s batting lineup approached the chase with confidence and authority.

Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry Lead the Chase
Australia’s opening pair immediately put England’s bowlers under pressure. Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll attacked loose deliveries and ensured the required run rate never became an issue.
Although Voll departed at the end of the powerplay, Australia had already gained a significant advantage. England briefly fought back when Capsey dismissed Mooney, but the visitors remained firmly in command.
The chase was then taken over by Ellyse Perry, who produced a classy innings filled with trademark strokeplay. Perry rotated the strike effectively while punishing scoring opportunities, keeping Australia comfortably ahead of the target.
Her half-century came in commanding fashion and effectively ended England’s hopes of a comeback. Perry eventually departed for 64, but by then Australia were within touching distance of victory.
The Australians completed the chase with ten balls remaining, securing a comfortable win and sending an early message to the rest of the teams preparing for the tournament.

Positive Signs Ahead of the World Cup
Warm-up matches are often used to test combinations, assess player form and fine-tune strategies before major tournaments. For both India and Australia, the results delivered more than just victories.
India will be encouraged by contributions across the batting order and the effectiveness of their spin attack, while Australia once again demonstrated the depth and versatility that have made them a dominant force in women’s cricket for over a decade.
As the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 draws closer, both teams have started their preparations on the right note. If these opening performances are any indication, India and Australia could play significant roles in shaping the outcome of the tournament in the weeks ahead.
